Fraunhofer – Institut für Windenergie und Energiesystemtechnik (IWES)

The R&D Division Bioenergy System Technology of the Fraunhofer-IWES in Hanau is engaged in application-oriented research and development in renewable energy generation and distribution including the energetic use of biomass. IWES' aims in the field of systems technology are cost reductions and improvements in technical quality, the acceleration of technical developments and the dissemination of new technologies as well as the provision of a “scientific infrastructure“ for industry and politics. IWES supports the following activities:

  • • Use of biomass in new energy conversion technologies, such as micro gas turbines, fuel cells, Stirling engines and thermophotovoltaics
  • • Optimisation of the interaction between biogas generation and converter units
  • • Measurement processes and sensory analyses for the optimised operational control of biomass systems
  • • Standardisation and modularisation of systems using biomass
  • • Widespread testing programme, monitoring, research and studies
  • • Use of biomass in hybrid systems to replace fossil fuel
  • • Training of qualified staff for research, industry and users
  • • Micro gas distribution systems
  • • Biogas upgrading to biomethane
